What Is Thorne Advanced Iron Complex?

Thorne Advanced Iron Complex is a comprehensive, multi-nutrient iron formula that goes beyond standard iron supplements by combining highly bioavailable chelated iron with a synergistic blend of Vitamins B and C specifically selected to maximize iron absorption, optimize red blood cell production, and support the full metabolic pathway from iron intake to functional hemoglobin synthesis. While most iron supplements deliver iron alone — leaving the body to source the co-nutrients needed for iron utilization from diet — Thorne’s Advanced Iron Complex delivers everything needed for complete, efficient iron metabolism in a single capsule. NSF Certified for Sport®.

Why Vitamins B & C With Iron?

Iron does not work in isolation. Effective iron metabolism — from intestinal absorption through hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production — requires multiple co-nutrients at every step:

  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) — The most clinically validated enhancer of non-heme iron absorption. Vitamin C reduces ferric iron (Fe³⁺) to the more absorbable ferrous form (Fe²⁺) in the gut lumen, chelates iron into a soluble complex that resists precipitation at intestinal pH, and counteracts the inhibitory effects of phytates, tannins, and other dietary iron absorption inhibitors. Studies consistently show Vitamin C co-administration increases non-heme iron absorption by 2–6 fold. Additionally, Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen — the structural protein of red blood cell vessel walls
  • Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin) — Essential for DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing red blood cell precursors in bone marrow. B12 deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia — enlarged, immature red blood cells that cannot carry oxygen efficiently — which can coexist with iron deficiency and compound the severity of anemia. Methylcobalamin is the active, directly bioavailable form that requires no enzymatic conversion
  • Folate (as 5-MTHF) — Works in concert with B12 in red blood cell DNA synthesis and maturation. Folate deficiency, like B12 deficiency, causes megaloblastic anemia. The active 5-MTHF form bypasses MTHFR enzyme conversion issues that affect 40–60% of the population
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxal 5’-Phosphate) — Essential cofactor in heme synthesis — the iron-containing component of hemoglobin. B6 is required for the first and rate-limiting step of heme biosynthesis (ALA synthase reaction). B6 deficiency causes a distinct form of iron-deficiency-like anemia (sideroblastic anemia) despite adequate iron, because heme cannot be assembled without B6
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) — Required for iron mobilization from storage (ferritin) and for the proper function of iron-dependent enzymes. Riboflavin deficiency impairs iron absorption and utilization independently of iron intake, and riboflavin supplementation has been shown to improve hemoglobin response to iron therapy

Key Benefits

  • Optimized Iron Absorption — Vitamin C co-formulation dramatically increases non-heme iron bioavailability by 2–6x compared to iron alone, ensuring that the iron in each capsule actually reaches the bloodstream rather than being lost in stool
  • Complete Hemoglobin & Red Blood Cell Support — B12 (methylcobalamin), methylfolate, and B6 (P-5-P) address all three co-nutrient requirements for red blood cell DNA synthesis and heme assembly — the most common nutritional co-deficiencies that impair iron therapy response
  • Energy Production & Fatigue Reduction — Iron is a required cofactor in mitochondrial cytochromes for ATP synthesis. Iron deficiency directly impairs cellular energy production, causing profound fatigue. The B vitamins in this formula further support mitochondrial energy pathways, compounding the energy-supporting effect
  • Immune System Support — Iron supports immune cell proliferation; Vitamin C supports immune cell function and acts as a potent antioxidant protecting immune cells from oxidative damage during infection; B vitamins support lymphocyte and antibody production
  • Superior to Standard Iron Supplements — Standard iron supplements (ferrous sulfate alone) address only the iron deficiency component while leaving B vitamin and Vitamin C co-deficiencies — which are common in the same populations at risk of iron deficiency — completely unaddressed. This explains why many individuals fail to respond adequately to iron monotherapy

Who Should Take This?

  • Individuals with diagnosed iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia under medical supervision
  • Women of childbearing age with higher iron requirements due to menstrual losses
  • Pregnant and postpartum women (consult healthcare provider for prenatal-specific iron needs)
  • Vegans and vegetarians relying exclusively on lower-bioavailability non-heme plant iron sources
  • Endurance athletes prone to exercise-induced iron depletion via hemolysis, sweat, and GI losses
  • Individuals who have had inadequate response to standard ferrous sulfate iron therapy
  • Those with suspected combined iron + B vitamin deficiency (common in restrictive diets)
  • Competitive athletes requiring NSF Certified for Sport® verified iron supplementation

How to Use

Take 1 capsule daily with a light meal, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. For optimal iron absorption: avoid taking with calcium-rich foods, dairy products, coffee, tea, antacids, or other mineral supplements within 2 hours. Vitamin C is already included in the formula to maximize absorption — no additional Vitamin C supplement is required with this dose. Iron status should be monitored via periodic blood testing (ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, CBC) under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Do not supplement iron without confirmed deficiency via blood testing.

Directions

Take 1 capsule daily with a light meal, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Vitamin C is included in the formula to enhance iron absorption — no additional Vitamin C supplement is required. For optimal absorption, avoid taking within 2 hours of calcium supplements, dairy products, coffee, tea, antacids, or other mineral supplements. Do not take on an empty stomach if GI sensitivity occurs. Monitor iron status with periodic blood testing under healthcare practitioner guidance. For best results, take at the same time each day consistently.

Warnings

Keep out of reach of children. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years of age — in case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not use if safety seal is damaged or missing. Avoid taking within 2 hours of antacids, calcium supplements, dairy, tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics, levothyroxine (thyroid medication), levodopa, or methyldopa, as these reduce iron absorption or are affected by iron. Individuals with hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, thalassemia, or other iron overload conditions must not use without physician supervision. Contains Vitamin C — high-dose Vitamin C may cause GI discomfort in sensitive individuals; take with food.

This product is a dietary supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Individual results may vary. Iron supplementation should be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. Do not self-diagnose iron deficiency — consult your healthcare provider for proper blood testing (serum ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, CBC) and diagnosis before initiating iron supplementation. Iron overload (hemochromatosis) can cause serious organ damage — individuals with hereditary hemochromatosis or known iron overload disorders should not use this product. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or with a pre-existing medical condition.
